DoubleTree Omaha

Dinner Detective Murder Mystery Dinner Theater Show, Omaha, NE Jan. 20, 2015

Who doesn't enjoy a good mystery?

So join us as we head to downtown Omaha's Doubletree Hotel for a private Dinner Detective event.

America's largest interactive murder mystery dinner show, the experience is described as always funny and unpredictable.

You can be part of the fun - you may even be chosen to play a part.

With private events, the custom script allows for more audience participation. And our noon-hour "dinner" is an option not available to the public.

Every whodunit performance features an interrogation reception with hors d'oeuvres and a four-course sit-down meal.

There are even prize packages for the person who cracks - or comes closest to cracking - the case.

Cost: $125/person (includes food, coffee, tea and gratuity for those items; cash bar is available)

Amana Colonies Ramada

Winterfest at the Amana Colonies, Jan. 24-25, 2015

Assuming you haven't signed up for the Amana Freezer 5K Run/Walk, your warm-up at this indoor/outdoor winter festival will be a bowl of chili and some hot apple cider or cocoa.

That should make it easier to watch the ice sculptor at work as you head for the log-sawing competition or to play Hammerschlagen. What? It's a race to drive a nail into a cross-section of a log.

If that's not your thing, there's always the Great Amana Ham-Put, The Winter Wreath Toss, and the Best Beard Competition (if you haven't started growing that yet, you'll have to be a spectator.)

Demonstrations include candy-making, hand carding & spinning, quilting, and ice harvesting. You also can make your own pretzels at the Amana Meat Shop & Smokehouse, take a break at the Millstream Brewery or tour the Amana Furniture Shop.

For the young at heart, there's icicle decorating, a scavenger hunt, marshmallow roast and sledding.

To cap off the celebration, the festival's Snow Ball features dancing and a buffet meal.

We'll stay over at the Ramada Williamsburg, which features the indoor Wasserbahn Waterpark.

(And, since the Tanger Outlet shopping mall is only a few minutes from our hotel, if enough passengers want to venture there at some point during the trips, that can likely be arranged with your bus driver.)

Cost: $175/person or $400 for family of four (includes hotel and two sack lunches)

Mall of America

The Mall of America, Feb. 19-20, 2015

This is an overnight trip ... you'll have plenty of time to browse, eat, play and get in some really good people-watching as you soak up the ambiance of this little universe in Bloomington, Minnesota.

We'll stay at the mall's own Radisson Blu, with extravagant accommodations and services, including package pickup from wherever you happen to be when your arms get full -- and they will!

When you're done shopping, you can take a dip in Blu's indoor saline pool ("as refreshing as a dip in the ocean") or take advantage of their newly opened Solimar Spa.

This trip could be a Valentine's Day present for you and your special someone.

Either way, it's a getaway you can customize to meet your needs - and your wants!
